The Fiesta Solar festival that takes place in Ghent on 28 August will showcase bars, sound and light installations and snack stalls that will all run entirely on solar energy. Organisers of this stunt will use either LED lighting or about 70 solar panels, capturing sufficient photons from the sun to generate 80 kilowatt electricity or the same kilo wattage used by the average household in eight days. The solar installation will be erected a few days before the commencement of the festival to ensure the batteries are sufficiently charged. If the batteries cannot deal with the load, they will be backed up by the mains. All the kilo wattage used will be converted into solar energy and pumped back into the network. Fiesta Solar will finance Solar Zonder Grenzen (solar without boundaries), an organisation providing solar-powered developmental aid. "We bring solar cells to areas with limited or hardly any electricity," says organiser Bernolet: "We install panels in schools and hospitals in countries like Guatemala, Mongolia and Benin."
