In Flanders Fields Short Film Screening & Reception

11/22/11

The Government of Flanders, Belgium will be commemorating the Centennial of the First World War with many special events during the period 2014-2018. World War I or the 'Great War' was the first global conflict in history, lasting from 28 July 1914 until 11 November 1918. The events of 1914-1918 have had a fundamental impact on our society as a whole and to insure that all the victims of this horrible war receive a worthy tribute, Flanders House will plan various smaller events in the years leading up to the Centennial. On November 15, Flanders House New York hosted a Short Film Screening & Reception on the occasion of Veterans Day 2011. The program included:

Talk by Stephen L. Harris, U.S. Army veteran and writer of the highly acclaimed trilogy on New York City's National Guard in World War I, which includes Duty, Honor, Privilege; Harlem's Hell Fighters; and Duffy's War.

Screening of a documentary on the Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial in the town of Waregem, the only World War I American cemetery in Belgium.

Screening of Tunnelrat, a short film by Flemish director Raf Reyntjens, about an Allied and a German soldier who face one another below the WW I front and are confronted with their common enemy: war itself.
