Hedwig Brouckaert is a Belgian visual artist, originally from Ghent, living and working in NYC. After she obtained a Masters in Fine Art from the University of California, Davis in 2005, she kept returning to the States for several projects and settled in 2010 in NYC. Previously she had obtained a Masters at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels and a Postgraduate at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Belgium. Over the years Brouckaert received numerous artist grants from the Flemish Government in Belgium, and fellowships and residencies of the Rockefeller Foundation – Bellagio (Italy), Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities (Italy), Cité Internationale des Arts Paris, Hafnarborg Museum of Iceland, Yaddo (NY), Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VA), Ragdale Foundation (Chicago), and Vermont Studio Center (VT). Brouckaert showed her work in many group and solo exhibitions internationally; in 2011 her work was presented with Jorinde Voigt and Nelleke Beltjens in ‘Re/pro/ducing Complexity’ at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Deurle, Belgium and in 2012 in the Städtische Galerie Villa Zanders near Cologne in Germany. In 2014 she had a solo presentation at the VOLTA NY art fair in SOHO and at the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, and participated in 2016 with Maxime Van Melkebeke’s innovative curatorial project in the Lower East Side. She curated ‘Liminal Lyrics’ an exhibition with work by Flemish, Dutch and American artists on view last fall at KUNSTRAUM in Brooklyn. Until June 4th her work is on view at ‘Crossing the Dateline’, an international group show at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) in Thailand.

Currently Hedwig Brouckaert is working in her studio located at Nurture Art Gallery in Bushwick (Brooklyn), preparing a solo show at Galerie Jan Dhaese in Ghent opening in September and a three person show curated by Peter Lodermeyer at Schmidt und Schutte Gallery in Cologne in November.

For many years Hedwig Brouckaert worked as a sculptor, but since 2006 she has focused her practice on drawing and installations. Advertising images of magazines and mail order catalogues are the source of her work. She is interested in the tension between the highly representational and readable starting point and the abstracted, illegible result of her extensive layering process. The images she uses often have extremely high production value. Magazines arriving as a pristine, glowing object in the mail or on the newsstand yet meant to disappear quickly and to become trash, to be replaced by the most recent up to date information. Her work on the contrary, is the result of an antiquated and slow process. It refers to the culture that produced them, but totally transforms the original narrative; it rereads their narrow and commercial script.
