Organizers of the international festival, Memphis in May, which is almost like an American equivalent of the Ghent Festival, chose Belgium as theme country for their May 2011 event.

The Memphis in May festival consists of four major events: The Beale Street Music Festival, International Week (a range of activities dedicated to a specific country, in this case Belgium), The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and Sunset Symphony.

Festival director Diane Hampton describes Belgium as "the essence of Europe: old, seat of the EU and NATO, multicultural, multilingual and renowned for its incredible cuisine". (Nice to hear it from someone else!) According to the organisation, Belgium is also a prosperous country, famous for its waffles, chocolate and lace.
