Dorothée van den Berghe’s My Queen Karo has been selected for the TriBeCa International Film Festival in New York. The film will be screened in the ‘showcase’ program, described by the festival as a collection of ‘cinema jewels’.

For its ‘Seven World-cinema jewels’ program TriBeCa selects films that left an impression on the international stage and gives them the opportunity to impress the NY audience. My Queen Karo had its international premiere at the International Film Festival of Toronto, where it even received a standing ovation.

After the resounding kick-off at Toronto, the film went on to screenings at Palm Springs, Rotterdam and Valladolid. Recently the film opened in theatres in the Netherlands and got praising reviews from the Dutch press.

The TriBeCa International Film Festival (21 April – 2 May) was founded by (amongst others) Robert De Niro following the attacks on the World Trade Center. Since 2002 the festival has built an international reputation for a diverse selection of both upcoming and established filmmakers. Chief creative officer of the festival is Geoffrey Gilmore, a man with a reputation in Independent cinema and who until recently was working for the Sundance Film Festival.

In Dorothée van den Berghe's beautiful and touching coming-of-age story, 10-year-old Karo moves with her parents Raven and Dalia to a vibrant and carefree squatter's commune in 1970s Amsterdam. But when Raven's relationship with a new woman fractures their family and threatens the commune's utopia, both Raven's lofty ideals and Karo's childish innocence will be challenged by the messy realities of human emotion.

My Queen Karo is a Belgian-Dutch co-production. Flemish producers are Frank Van Passel, Bert Hamelinck en Kato Maes for Caviar Films.
