Thirty Percent Increase in Wind Energy in 2009
The power of wind energy turbines in Flanders rose by almost 56 megawatt to 240 megawatt in 2009, indicating an increase of 30 percent. At present 147 wind turbines are operational. The quadrupling of enquiries addressed to the interdepartmental wind work group when compared to 2008 confirms that this growth trend is set to continue. In relation to surface area, Flanders has erected 18 kilowatt wind power per square metre. In France this stands at 8 kilowatt. Germany and the Netherlands, however, boast 72 and 55 kilowatt respectively. Wallonia counted 145 turbines at the end of 2009, generating a total power output of 272 megawatt or 16 kilowatt per square metre. Wind energy currently constitutes 14 percent of the total production of green energy in Flanders.
